Moab: A Mountain Biking Mecca
Back in the early 1980s, Moab was still a quiet desert town, long past its mining boom and not yet the adventure capital we know today. Then mountain biking rolled onto the scene. Riders discovered that Moab’s slickrock and red cliffs weren’t just beautiful—they were perfect for testing this brand-new sport. Photos of riders against Moab’s surreal backdrop started appearing in Mountain Bike Magazine, and suddenly, the world was paying attention.
While the first mountain bike experiments took place in locations like Marin County and Crested Butte, it was Moab’s bold, otherworldly terrain that solidified the sport in the public imagination. Local pioneers like Bill and Robin Groff opened Rim Cyclery, began renting bikes, and helped create Rim Tours. They hosted Moab’s first Fat Tire Festival in 1986, drawing riders, gear companies, and media from across the globe. By the time the dust settled, Moab was officially on the map—and it’s stayed there ever since.
Today, with more than 200 miles of singletrack surrounding town, Moab remains a bucket-list destination for mountain bikers everywhere. And the best part? You don’t have to be a pro to experience it—our guided tours make the magic of Moab accessible to every rider.

- Hall of Fame Honors – The Groff brothers were inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 2013 for their role in making Moab a global biking hub.
- Epic Backdrops – Few places combine pedaling with scenery like Moab: red rock fins, canyon rims, and endless slickrock playgrounds.

Moab’s landscape is like nowhere else—towering red rock fins, slickrock playgrounds, desert singletrack, and panoramic canyon views. It's been called a “mecca for mountain bikers” for good reason, offering terrain that challenges experts and welcomes beginners alike.
I'M NOT AN EXPERIENCED MOUNTAIN BIKER - CAN I STILL JOIN A GUIDED TOUR?
Absolutely. Our guided tours are beginner-friendly and tailored to your comfort level. The Courthouse Loop tour is especially suited to beginners - but will entertain the intermediate or advanced riders too! Our expert guides know the trails like the back of their handlebars and will steer you down the right trailhead.
WHAT TRAILS DO YOUR TOURS USE?
Courthouse Loop (a.k.a. The Brand Trails) is best for beginners needing instruction.
The Dead Horse Point Trails are great for intermediate - or aspiring to be intermediate - riders.
The Klondike Bluffs trail (now an e-bike tour) requires intermediate skills to enjoy.
WHAT'S INCLUDED IN A GUIDED MOUNTAIN BIKE TOUR?
Your guides provide a high-quality mountain bike - fitted to your size, helmet, gloves, water, and snacks. Most importantly, your guides will drive the shuttle to the RIGHT trailhead and ensure that you don't get lost - or in over your head! Knowledgeable guides ensure your safety, teach skills, and add fascinating insights into Moab's geology, flora, and history.
HOW LONG ARE THE TOURS? ARE THERE FULL-DAY OPTIONS?

WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME ON A TOUR?

Guests need to bring and carry their own water.
HOW IS MOUNTAIN BIKING DIFFERENT IN MOAB?
Moab's terrain is unique - and rides differently than nearly any other trail. Hard-packed singletrack is interspersed with sections of "slickrock" (sandstone domes and undulations), and some patches of soft sand.
Riding can be rougher and more obstacle-ridden than most trails anywhere else, requiring technical know-how. In some cases these kinds of obstacles have ride arounds.
WHAT AGE DO RIDERS NEED TO BE TO PARTICIPATE
Kids aged 7 and up can join the Courthouse Loop Tour (AKA Moab Brand Trails), provided they’re comfortable riding a bike and meet our minimum height and weight requirements.
Other tours are ages 12 and up.
WHAT IF I'M TRAVELING SOLO? CAN I STILL JOIN A TOUR?
Of course! Solo travelers are welcome. We often group individuals together or offer private tours if preferred. Many solo guests find that the guided format adds community and confidence.
NOTE: Guided tours require at least two guests to go out. If you are a solo rider and no other guests join the tour, you will be charged an additional fee of $95.00 plus tax.
HOW DO I BOOK A GUIDED MOUNTAIN BIKING TOUR IN MOAB?
It’s easy! You can book online, call our adventure specialists, or stop by our shop in downtown Moab. We recommend booking early—especially in spring and fall, when trail conditions and weather are ideal.
I’m not an experienced mountain biker. Can I still join a guided tour?
Absolutely. Our tours are designed for riders of all abilities, including beginners. Our Brand Trails tour is the best choice for beginner riders. Our guide will adjust the pace, provide helpful tips, and choose the right trails so you feel comfortable and confident from the very start.
What trails do your mountain bike tours use?
We focus on some of Moab’s most scenic and approachable trails, including the Moab Brand Trails for beginners, the canyon-rim singletrack at Dead Horse Point State Park, and the slickrock climbs and dinosaur tracks of Klondike Bluffs. Each tour is carefully chosen to match the group’s ability and provide amazing views.
What’s included in a guided mountain bike tour?
Every tour includes a high-quality, full-suspension mountain bike (or e-mountain bike for the Klondike Bluffs ride), helmet, water bottle, and transportation to and from the trailhead. Your professional guide is with you every step of the way, sharing local knowledge and making sure the ride is both safe and fun.
How long are the tours?
Most of our rides are about 4.5 hours. This includes transfers, bike fitting, and orientation. Actual ride time will be between 2 to 3 hours, which is plenty of time to enjoy the trails without feeling rushed or exhausted. Currently, our tours are half-day adventures, which makes them easy to fit into a day of exploring other Moab activities.
What should I bring with me on a tour?
Wear comfortable athletic clothing and closed-toe shoes. Bring water in a bike bottle or a hydration pack. We recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a small backpack if you’d like to carry personal items. You hydration pack can also double as a small backpack for whatever you’d like to carry. Hydration packs are available for purchase at Moab Adventure Center. All the biking gear is included.
What kind of bikes do you provide? Can I bring my own?
We provide well-maintained, top-quality, full-suspension Santa Cruz mountain bikes fitted to your height. On the Klondike Bluffs ride, we use e-mountain bikes to help with the longer climbs. If you prefer, you’re welcome to bring your own bike, though most guests enjoy the convenience of our included gear.
Do the tours include transportation to the trailhead?
Yes. All of our tours include shuttle service to and from the trailhead. You’ll meet at the Moab Adventure Center downtown, and we’ll take care of the rest.
What age do riders need to be to participate?
Riders as young as 8 years old can join on the Brand Trails beginner ride. For intermediate tours at Dead Horse Point and Klondike Bluffs, the minimum age is generally 12 years old. Youth bikes and helmets are available.
Can kids ride their own bikes, or do you provide youth-sized bikes?
Yes. We have youth-sized bikes that make it easy for kids to ride on their own. Our guides are great with families and make sure kids feel included, safe, and supported throughout the ride.
What are the height requirements for mountain biking?
Guests who book any mountain biking adventure must be at least 47" (3'11") tall. If guests do not meet this height requirement, they will not be able to properly fit on the bike or be allowed to ride the bike.
What if I am the only person to book on a bike tour?
There is a two guest minimum required for the daily per person rate. If there is a solo traveler they can pay a solo rider fee ($95) and the tour will still go. If other groups/persons book later we can remove the fee. If the guest does not want to pay the $95 solo rider fee to go out on their own, we are happy to reschedule the guest for a different day that other riders have booked or to cancel and fully refund the guest.
Are bathrooms available during the ride?
Most trailheads have restrooms available before you start your ride. Once on the trail, there aren’t facilities, so we recommend using the restrooms before departing.
What if the weather is bad?
Tours run in most conditions, but if weather makes it unsafe (like thunderstorms or extreme heat), we’ll work with you to reschedule or find another activity. Moab weather changes quickly, so cancellations are rare, but your comfort and safety come first.
What if I’m traveling solo? Can I still join a tour?
Of course. Solo travelers are always welcome and often join group rides. It’s a great way to meet new people who share your sense of adventure.
