Wherever the Winds Take You
Your hot air balloon adventure begins at the Old Schoolhouse north of Moab, where you'll meet your pilot and ground crew just before sunrise. From there, the launch site will be chosen based on the morning’s wind patterns, ensuring a safe and spectacular journey through Moab’s open skies.
While every flight path is unique, you can expect breathtaking views of red rock mesas, winding canyons, and the distant La Sal Mountains. After landing, you’ll be returned to the Old Schoolhouse parking lot, wiser, windblown, and wondering why you didn’t do this sooner.

Adventure in Every Ride Since 1783
There’s something wonderfully absurd about hot air ballooning. In a world of supersonic jets, rocket launches, and GPS-guided drones, here we are—still floating through the sky in what amounts to a giant picnic basket strapped to a floating fabric bubble. And yet, despite its vintage oddities (or maybe because of them), ballooning remains one of the most enchanting forms of flight ever conceived.
The senses come alive in the sky, but unlike a bumpy plane ride or a white-knuckled helicopter tour, ballooning offers a kind of aerial serenity no other aircraft can replicate. There’s no turbulence. No engine rumble. No cockpit chaos or tray table drama. Just silence, stillness, and the occasional whoosh of the burner to remind you that yes, you are indeed levitating over a vast and ancient wilderness. And no, there is no steering wheel. You go where the wind takes you. How beautifully reckless is that?
You might think the age of ballooning should have quietly deflated after Kitty Hawk took flight, but no—balloon rides still hold a kind of magic that no modern marvel has managed to outshine. Each flight is a one-of-a-kind journey. No two sunrises drift the same. No two wind currents trace the same path across the desert sky. One morning you may glide over sandstone spires and echoing canyons, the next you may float so low you can wave to hikers on a trail—who probably wish they were in your shoes, or at least in your basket.
And about that basket. Yes, it’s wicker. Yes, you’ll be flying hundreds—maybe thousands—of feet above the earth in something you associate with farmers markets and grandmother's porch furniture. Why wicker? Ask your pilot. He knows the answer. He also knows the air currents, the land below, and how to land gracefully. You’re in good hands.
So step in. Hold on. Don’t worry—ballooning is the one adventure where standing up the whole time is the right move. Up, up, and away, my friend. The desert is calling, and it’s asking to be admired in absolute, reverent, awe-struck silence.
Frequently Asked Questions About Ballooning in Moab
WHEN DO HOT AIR BALLOON RIDES TAKE PLACE?
Balloon flights typically launch at sunrise—when the air is calm, the light is golden, and the desert wakes in a whisper. It’s early, yes, but trust us: watching the sun paint the red rock landscape from a thousand feet up is worth every lost snooze.
HOW LONG DOES THE BALLOONING EXPERIENCE LAST?
Plan for about 2.5 to 3 hours total, including check-in, transport to the launch site, inflation, flight (usually 45–60 minutes), landing, and a celebratory toast afterward. The flight time varies slightly depending on weather and wind conditions.
WHO PILOTS THE BALLOON?
Your pilot is a certified professional who’s not only trained in aviation but well-versed in Moab’s unique terrain and wind patterns. They also happen to be great storytellers and possibly part wizard, given how smoothly they navigate with no steering wheel.
HOW HIGH DOES THE BALLOON GO?
Anywhere from a few hundred feet above the desert floor to several thousand feet up, depending on the wind and terrain. Sometimes you'll skim just above the cliffs and canyons. Other times, you’ll be high enough to see the La Sal Mountains rise like islands through the morning mist.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR OR BRING?
Dress for the desert morning: layers are key. Comfortable shoes are a must (you’ll be standing the whole time), and a hat or sunglasses are helpful. Don’t worry about cold winds—there’s no wind chill in the basket because you’re moving with the breeze. And yes, bring your camera—this is bucket-list material.
CAN KIDS GO BALLOONING?
Children typically need to be at least 4 years old and it's best when they are tall enough to see over the basket edge.
WHAT ABOUT MOTION SENSITIVITY OR FEAR OF HEIGHTS
Ballooning is one of the gentlest forms of flight. No bumps. No sudden drops. Just smooth sailing with a soft landing. And even height-phobes say it’s not scary once you're up there. It’s more "floaty dream" than "thrill ride."
WILL WE KNOW WHERE WE'LL LAND?
Nope—and that’s part of the magic. Each flight is guided by the wind, so no two landings are ever the same. But don’t worry, your ground crew is tracking the balloon the entire time and will meet you upon landing with refreshments, high-fives, and transportation back to town.
