Prior to John Wesley Powell's exploratory expedition in 1869, the entire river & canyon region, beginning with Eastern Utah, was marked on maps as "The Great Unknown". Famous outlaws, moonshiners and prospecting ranchers took advantage of the canyon's difficulty to traverse. Today, we know and love it well.
